Face masks have become a necessity since the onset of the deadly coronavirus. When worn properly, it can prevent the wearer from inhaling respiratory droplets from an infected individual.
The effectiveness of masks in terms of reducing the spread of virus-laden aerosols is unquestionable. It gives an added layer of protection to the wearer. Unfortunately, most face masks available in the market don’t guarantee complete protection against the virus. One has to practice other safety measures such as frequent hand washing.
Challenging problems require innovative solutions. In this time of crisis, a London-based company has introduced a mask that can do more than reduce the spread of the deadly virus.
It’s called the Invisi Smart mask – a face mask that can destroy the Covid-19 virus.
WHAT IT IS & WHAT IT DOES
Invisi Smart masks are just like any ordinary surgical face mask at first glance. But these masks are coated with titanium dioxide (Ti02), a virucidal (virus-killing) agent. Instead of just blocking the germs that land on the mask’s surface, Ti02 destroys them. Hence, the virus won’t be transmitted further by touch.
Ti02’s ability to destroy the corona virus has been tested by researchers at the University of Cambridge. They sprayed tiles with the said chemical before applying SARS-CoV-2 particles or the COVID-19 virus. They have found out that the technology did destroy the virus and effectively inhibited virus infection for up to 120 days.
The École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne or also known as EPFL, a research institute and university in Lausanne, Switzerland, also conducted a study on the chemical and confirmed that masks coated with Ti02 kill germs.
Invisi Smart masks are reusable and washable. You can wash the mask to remove surface dirt and get protection for up to 30 days. There is also a version that can only last five days and is less costly than its counterpart.
On top of that, the mask features a logo that fades as the titanium dioxide in it diminishes. So you’ll know when it’s time to get a new one.
While it is fascinating what Invisi Smart can do, just like any other face masks, it won’t make any difference if you don’t wear it the proper way. The face mask should cover the mouth and nose and fit securely against the side of your face.
Further safety precautions such as washing hands with soap and running water for twenty seconds after touching the mask are needed for other type of masks such as the single-used type and N95 mask. You should avoid wearing the mask on your forehead or neck or touch any part of the face mask as it could be contaminated with virus. When removing a mask, you should only handle the ties, straps, or clips. It is also recommended not to take the mask off and put it back on in quick successions. More importantly, do not let someone else use your mask.
